Fun with Kids

Jesus said "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." It is very obvious that Jesus himself loves kids. He warned anybody who hinder the kids coming to him. Even he declared that the kingdom of God belongs to such as them! What an amazing revelation!!
Many of us do not realize this. We thought that the Good News is for adult consumption, only for person who is able to understand and digest the preaching. The disciples of Jesus also had the same opinion. Maybe because they thought that those children were too noisy and could not listen to what Jesus was teaching about, so they kept the children away from Jesus. But Jesus' reaction was breathtaking. He demanded the disciples to let the children come to him. And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. I suppose that Jesus suddenly stopped preaching and gave fully attention to the kids. I don’t know if Jesus even played with them because I believe that Jesus knew the kid’s need and their life, so for me it is not surprising if Jesus took time playing together with the kids.
Because of that very reason we decided to take a visit to the orphanage. The first purpose is to have fun with the children. We know that the children need to play and to have fun because that matter is their lives. So on mid October 2007 we the three of us (Joshua, Mir, and Noeg) together with Paula, Mir’s youngest sister, took a visit to the Rajawali Perkasa Orphanage Merauke and spend time with the kids for three days. In this orphanage, which is owned by Mrs.Kaisiepo, Mir had worked for almost 3 years. So this visitation was like a good old time meeting between Mir and the kids.
On the first day we played Bingo. Well, that was very exciting. The kids firstly didn’t know how to play and found many difficulties especially the younger kids. But with the helping of the older kids, they even refused to stop playing the games even though we almost run of the gift. The most wonderful moment was when one of them yelled ‘Bingo’ and then was confused when he/she had to choose one gift from many laid on the table. It was funny when a teenager boy chose to have a soap rather than a ball, or when there were not many choices anymore, a young boy chose a hair band!! Well, we were sorry for him and we suggested him to change the gift with other kids who also got the ‘not appropriate gift’.
On the second day we played a bottle and water. It was a simple games but they liked it so much. They like to play on an open field. The orphanage has a big yard and they used to play a volleyball or a football in the evening. Because for some times they didn’t have any ball, so when we came with a football, their face were shining brightly. After that, we watched a movie ‘Lion King’ and we drank tea together and ate chips. Well, the TV we used to watch film was too small and the kids could not follow the Indonesian sub title, so many of them didn’t understand the movie. So next time we will play a movie through a projector and we choose a film which is dubbed in Indonesian.
On the last day, we did a little bit cleaning the orphanage. All the windows are cleaned, floors swept. We did a dining room make over. We put a new table clothe, installed a new lamp, set a new curtain, etc. After that we played a lot of funny games. Beside playing games, we also gave them many presents. We supplied them with stuff for daily need and we also gave them medication. There are 31 kids in total living in the orphanage. The youngest is 5 years old and the oldest is 16 years old. None of them has a very serious disease but most of them has a problem related with a personal hygiene.
This is a short story about our visit to the orphanage. We enjoyed spending time and having fun with the kids. We are looking forward to seeing them very soon.
All blessings.
